Glutathione (GSH)

Glutathione (GSH) is a naturally occurring tripeptide found throughout human and other biological cells. It is composed of glutamate, cysteine, and glycine.

Glutathione is one of the major intracellular redox-regulating molecules and plays an important biological role in maintaining the cellular reducing environment and responding to oxidative stress.

In antioxidant research, GSH is widely studied in connection with reactive oxygen species (ROS), free radicals, lipid peroxidation, and cellular oxidative-stress responses. It functions alongside enzyme systems including glutathione peroxidase and glutathione reductase to support cellular redox regulation.

Glutathione also participates in metabolic processes involving enzymes such as Glutathione S-Transferases (GSTs), making it an important research molecule for investigating cellular detoxification, xenobiotic metabolism, and hepatic cell biology.

The relationship between reduced glutathione (GSH) and its oxidized form, GSSG, is frequently investigated as an indicator of cellular redox status and is relevant to studies involving mitochondrial biology, cellular stress, cell survival, and oxidative mechanisms associated with aging.

Although glutathione has well-established physiological functions, findings from particular formulations, administration routes, or experimental systems should not automatically be interpreted as established cosmetic, anti-aging, or therapeutic effects in humans.
