AICAR (Acadesine)

AICAR, short for 5-Aminoimidazole-4-carboxamide ribonucleoside and also known as Acadesine, is an experimental compound widely used in cellular metabolism and molecular biology research.

After entering cells, AICAR can be metabolized to ZMP (AICAR monophosphate). Because ZMP acts as an AMP analog, AICAR is commonly used as an experimental research tool for investigating AMPK (AMP-activated protein kinase) and related metabolic signaling pathways.

In life science research, AICAR is studied in connection with cellular energy sensing, glucose uptake and metabolism, fatty acid oxidation, lipid metabolism, mitochondrial function, and metabolic homeostasis. This makes it a useful compound for investigating relationships between AMPK-associated signaling and cellular energy metabolism.

Importantly, not all cellular effects of AICAR can necessarily be attributed solely to AMPK activation, as its metabolites may also participate in other AMP/ZMP-related cellular processes. For this reason, describing AICAR as an AMPK-related metabolic research compound provides a more precise scientific characterization.

AICAR is primarily an experimental research compound, and findings from cellular or animal studies should not be interpreted as established fat-loss, performance-enhancing, or therapeutic effects in humans.
