Melanotan II (MT-II / MT-2)

Melanotan II (MT-II or MT-2) is a synthetic cyclic peptide developed through research involving the structure and biological activity of α-MSH (alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone).

A major area of Melanotan II research involves the melanocortin receptor system. Unlike pigmentation research focused primarily on MC1R, MT-II can interact pharmacologically with multiple melanocortin receptor subtypes, making it a useful experimental tool for investigating melanocortin receptor biology.

In skin and pigmentation research, particular attention is given to MC1R (Melanocortin-1 Receptor). Experimental studies investigate relationships between MC1R signaling, melanocyte activity, melanin synthesis (melanogenesis), and skin pigmentation mechanisms.

Because melanocortin receptors participate in multiple physiological signaling systems, Melanotan II has also been investigated in research involving the central nervous system, energy homeostasis, feeding behavior, and other neuroendocrine mechanisms.

Melanotan II is distinct from Melanotan I. Although both originated from α-MSH-related research, they differ in molecular structure, receptor activity, and experimental characteristics, and findings involving one peptide should not automatically be attributed to the other.
