Erythropoietin (EPO) is a glycoprotein hormone that plays an important physiological role in the regulation of red blood cell production. In humans, endogenous EPO is produced primarily by the kidneys and participates in the body’s response to reduced oxygen availability.

A major area of EPO research involves Erythropoietin Receptor (EPOR) signaling. Interaction between EPO and EPOR activates intracellular signaling pathways associated with the survival, proliferation, and differentiation of erythroid progenitor cells and erythropoiesis.

In hematology research, EPO is also investigated in connection with bone marrow biology, hemoglobin formation, red blood cell maturation, and physiological oxygen-transport mechanisms.

Because EPO production is closely associated with oxygen sensing, research also examines relationships among EPO, hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF) pathways, cellular oxygen sensing, and hypoxia-responsive gene expression.

EPO/EPOR signaling has additionally been investigated in different cellular and tissue models. Such experimental findings should not automatically be interpreted as established therapeutic effects in humans.
